Have you found a cat?

You have now become a very important person in ensuring this cat lives. There are different approaches to a found cat depending on whether it is a kitten or an adult cat. We will outline both below.

Kitten

If you found a kitten

Look for a mother or sibling

The success of a young kitten relies heavily on being able to drink a mothers milk and to be raised with another young kitten to develop the correct habits when they are grown. If you find a kitten you MUST search for the mother or other kittens in the same area before taking this kitten home. This could be a matter of life or death

Don't move the kitten for X days

According to Swedish law, kittens should not be relocated for X days. This means that the kittens might have to legally stay with you as a support home until SMK or another rescue can take this kitten. Be prepared to abide by this law and to endure a lot of extra work during this time.

Kitten care is tough work

Depending on the age, you may be required to bottle feed the kitten with formula to ensure it lives. This can even mean feeding as often as every 2 hours. Say goodbye to sleep! All cats (kitten and older) can crash if given different food or too much food when found. Please ask SMK for guidance on the proper way to take care of this kitten. We know it is hard work but we thank you for you kindness and efforts to save a kittens life.

Advertise the kitten

  1. Vilse.nu is Swedens national registry for lost and found cats. This should be the first place you go to report a lost cat. It is free to create an ad.

  2. Every town has at least one local page for residents. Please share photos and where you found the kittens on some of your local pages. Below are some we use.

Adult cat

If you found an adult cat

  1. Assess the cat - Look for signs of abandonement.
    • Feel under the fur coat for its ribs. If you can easily feel the ribs it could be a sign its starving.

    • Look in the cats ears. do you see black residue inside? This can be from earmites if they stay outside for too long

    • How many ticks can you find? If there are many, this likely means there is no owner to remove them.

  2. Check for Chip or Tattoo - The easiest way to find an owner is to see if the cat is registered. Look in the ear for a tattoo number or find a chip reader. SMK has chip readers in Ljungby and Älmhult, but you can also find them at vets and even sometimes the police.
  3. Can you care for the cat? We need to know if you can offer your home as a support home for the cat or if SMK needs to find another home. We always seem to have more rescue cats than support homes so its always a huge relief to us if you can temporarily house the cat.
  4. Don't overfeed it - All cats (kitten and older) can crash if given different food or too much food when found. This could result in death even when you meant well by feeding a hungry cat. Please ask SMK for guidance on the proper way to feed the cat. We know it is hard work but we thank you for you kindness and efforts to save a cats life.
